Ebert continued the show, first as Roger Ebert and the Movies with guest cohosts, and then as At the Movies with Ebert and Roeper with the addition of his Sun Times colleague Richard Roeper. Ebert stopped appearing on the show in 2006 because he lost the ability to speak due to his cancer and Roeper continued with guests until the two were removed from the show by their distributor, Disney ABC Domestic Television, in 2008. They were replaced by Ben Lyons (son of film critic Jeffery Lyons) and film critic and Turner Classic Movies presenter Ben Mankiewicz in a move to skew to younger audience. While most of the old fanbase of the show had no problem with Ben Mankiewicz, almost all of them (and Ebert himself) took issue with Ben Lyons’ skill http://rogersfarmsupply.com/2012/11/27/four-times-a-year-tourism-statistics-are-collected-by-the/, ethics and taste. The two Bens were fired from the show a little over a year later. Scott and Michael Phillips, choices Ebert expressed satisfaction with despite no longer having anything to do with the show. However, these two hosts only lasted from August 2009 to March 2010, when Disney ABC simply pulled the plug on the show, ending Siskel and Ebert’s TV legacy for good.Or so we thought. Later in 2010, Ebert announced he had purchased the rights to the show and had taken it back to PBS. His new Ebert Presents: At the Movies began airing in January 2011, with Ignaty Vishnevetsky of Mubi and Christy Lemire of the Associated Press as the new critics. Ebert himself made appearances on the show, with Bill Curtis narrating special versions of some of his recent written reviews. The show was a ratings success, but due to funding problems it went on hiatus at the end of 2011, and following Ebert’s death from cancer on April 4, 2013, it is unlikely to return.
An alcoholic with a violent temper, Scott had a long standing reputation as being one of Hollywood’s « Bad Boys », although he mellowed considerably with age. Scott was married five times to four different women: Carolyn Hughes (1951 1955), Patricia Reed (1955 1960), Colleen Dewhurst (1960 1965, 1967 1972) and Trish Van Devere (1972 1999). Large Ham: More so in his later years. Rated M for Manly: He did not have an impressive physique but more than compensated for this through his guttural voice, volatile temper, and the unflinching and incisive quality that he brought to his iconic performances. Suffice to say, he would be horribly miscast in a Chick Flick. Reaction Shot: Scott’s tortured screams of « turn it off » in the 1979 film Hardcore have been mashed up numerous times with artistic performances that are so bad they’re good. The result? Videos like these. Younger Than They Look: True throughout his career. Notably, he played a 60 year old Patton when he was 42, and a 70 plus Scrooge when he was 57. His alcoholism may have been responsible for his older appearance. He also played General Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove at age 35. While Turgidson’s age was never brought up it is still quite young for a General.
